As Métis (a French word meaning mixed) we were born into life as a result of an Indigenous agenda to build prosperity through the mixing of bloodlines, and defined by the economically and culturally beneficial principals of respect, inclusion, mutual appreciation, consideration, co-habitation, and acceptance of differences in religion, language, culture, tradition and custom. As descendants of this great familial coming together we have much to celebrate and much to offer.
The purpose of this web site.
There is much to unpack regarding the delicate and often volatile subject of the mixing of blood lines, families and cultures. So, please bear with me as I try my best to give this subject the time and respect it is due. My deeply held desire is to illuminate, bring relief, promote healing through belonging, and contribute to a hope filled pathway into our shared future.
A special consideration is due for those who identify as Mixed Blood or Half Breed.
Your story is unique in the history of the mixing of European and Indigenous bloodlines, therefore I feel It would be out of place and disrespectful for me to assume that I could adequately represent or tell your story. However, I firmly hold to the Vision of the Métis spiritual leader, Louis Riel, of a promised land where Indigenous people, (Indians, Half Breeds, and Métis) and white European settlers could live and prosper together in peace. This promised land is available to all of us in the here and now and is found within, it is made manifest in the way we regard, consider, treat and include one another. So, with that said I hope you also will find value and support in the Métis stories I have to tell.
A message from the author and editor of this site - I was born in the Red River area of Manitoba, Canada. Early in my life, at about one year of age, my mother moved us to the United States, a place called Astoria Oregon. The rest of my life story can be found intertwined within the larger stories of my family and my people, the Métis of Red River. As you peruse the content of this site keep in mind that I will be building it's content over time and will include the thoughts and perspectives of others (with appropriate acknowledgments and permissions) to refine and better tell this story. Also since what you will be reading is a work in progress, there will be grammatical issues that will be addressed once I begin the task of organizing and editing the content into a readable flow.
