In a film based on true events, Louis Riel (Raymond Cloutier) is a Metis Indian returning to his home on the western prairies after studying law in Quebec. With Canadian Prime Minister John Macdonald planning on unifying Canada via a trans-continental railroad, Riel sees the Metis' traditional nomadic, hunting lifestyle under threat. He leads two separate rebellions against the Canadian military, casting him in the conflicting roles of folk hero, founding father, turncoat and villain.
I found this movie online and was happy to see the Riel story handled in relativley respectful manner. Yes, there are misrepresentations and little representation of the indigenous world view and way of life that Louis Riel and his followers were fighting for.

In 1885, a Texas Ranger travels to Canada to arrest a trapper who's wanted for murder and who's stirring up the Natives in a rebellion against the Canadian government. . . . . . Texas Ranger Dusty Rivers ("Isn't that a contradiction in terms?", another character asks him) travels to Canada in the 1880s in search of Jacques Corbeau, who is wanted for murder. He wanders into the midst of the Riel Rebellion, in which Métis (people of French and Native heritage) and Natives want a separate nation. Dusty falls for nurse April Logan, who is also loved by Mountie Jim Brett. April's brother is involved with Courbeau's daughter Louvette, which leads to trouble during the battles between the rebels and the Mounties. Through it all Dusty is determined to bring Corbeau back to Texas (and April, too, if he can manage it.)
I found this movie online and was stunned to see a representation of our Metis people that was so cartoonish in it's racial bias. However, I feel the movie is valuable as a reference for those of us who wish to know something about the social climate that our parents and grandparents had to endure.
