One of the more misunderstood qualities of the Metis people is our unique ability to make a life in both the Indigenous and the European worlds. Of course as Metis, how we see and what we value is very much aligned with the Indigenous way of being, but we also seem especially suited to adapt and incorporate some of the various European ways and art forms into our identity as Metis. This is an expansive quality and a characteristic that has enabled us to survive and to thrive over many generations. With this expansive quality in mind I would like to introduce my daughter (Zoe Mix) who among her many gifts and talents embodies the Metis spirit of creativity and love for all that is beautiful. Zoe has dedicated much of her young life, over 18 years, to the training and performance of Classical voice. Zoe's Metis Grandmother (Grandma Joan) was a great lover of classical voice with Soprano favorites like Maria Callas and Renata Tevaldi. Grandma Joan especially loved the great climactic aria from Madam Butterfly by Puccini and sung by Maria Callas. As an ardent supporter of Zoe's artistic dreams Grandma Joan encouraged her to dream large.. It is certain if Grandma Joan was with us today she would be proud and moved by Zoe's recent performance of Dvorak's Song to the Moon.. See video below.
